Choosing the Right Jacket for You: Women's 2023

By Katherine Donnelly on

While TREW may be best known for our bibs, we don't skimp when it comes to our jackets; what is a rad pair of bibs without an equally rad jacket to top it off, right?

Your women's jacket options

Our best seller: the Stella Jacket

Rugged, functional, and stylish are just a few words we throw around when we talk about our gear, and our jacket lineup for this year is no exception. The Stella Jacket Classic is our original women's jacket, and over the seasons it has been carefully tweaked and modified, with help from our beloved customers, to become what she is today. With a full-packed spec sheet and some rad new colors, we're confident that you'll find this little lady to your liking, whether you spend your time on or off-piste.

Brand new for the 2022/23 season, we're taking our bestselling women's jacket to the next level with our new Stella Jacket PRIMO. Made from 100% recycled materials and boasting improved durability and all-day comfort, we're so excited to see our flagship jacket grow even more with our brand values - blending our love for quality gear + sustainability.

Kellyn putting the Stella Classic through its paces.

The Stella Jacket screams high performance and unrivaled function for those backcountry-touring, resort-lapping badass babes out there, boasting our top-notch PNW 3L shell material that can stand up to even the worst elements, hence the origin of the material name (Performs in Nasty Weather).

With well-placed pit zips, bombproof construction, and thoughtful storage options for everything you need (plus that breakfast burrito you’ve been nursing since 6am), the Stella checks all the boxes.

Budget-friendly without skimping: the 2L Astoria and Popover

On the other end of the lineup, we've got two new options for 2021: the Astoria Jacket, and her mischievous anorak-styled friend, the Popover. Both of these jackets are from our brand new 2L PNW collection, meaning that they are 2-layer constructions - as opposed to the 3-layer construction on the Stella Jacket.

What does 2L or 3L mean? And how does each compare when it comes to durability, waterproofing, etc? Find out here:

Over the years, we've been hard at work trying to make skiing, snowboarding, and the gear you need to recreate comfortably and confidently more accessible to everyone, and our new PNW 2L collection is a direct product of this vision.

To put it concisely, the 2L Astoria jacket and Popover jacket are durable, stylish, and feature-packed options that won't break the bank. Most at home at the resort, these jackets are not as breathable as the 3L Stella. You won't, however, run into any issues when it comes to waterproofing since the both the Astoria and the Popover (like all of our outerwear products) are built to keep you dry in even the harshest of PNW conditions.

The resort may be its favorite place to roam, but no one ever said the Astoria kit can't get out for some hiking laps, too!

While we could talk gear for days, let's dive into the side-by-side comparison and show you just what makes these jacket designs shine:

Sizing tips
The Stella Primo will have a very similar shape to its Classic counterpart, but with more stretch in the fabric you may be able to size down. There is also more room in the hips in the Primo, too.
The Stella Classic fits true to size, and allows room to move and layer comfortably - but if you like to layer a lot underneath, or would like a looser look, size up! Also, you may need to size up if you have a larger hip/bum circumference.
The Astoria Jacket fits pretty spot on, and gives you room + stretch for a comfortable fit. If you have wider hips, you may want to size up to give yourself enough room to move comfortably.
The Popover is a unisex fit, and as such you will want to size down from your normal women’s size – and even though, you may find that it runs a little large, with it’s relaxed, boxy shape.
We highly suggest referring to the size chart on the product page before choosing your size.

Finding the right size and fit for you

While we wish all jackets could come straight from the pages of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, let's be realistic: every woman's body is beautifully unique, and to design and create snow gear that fits every single lady out there is a lofty goal. Nevertheless, we aim to please and continue to put considerable time and thought into designing gear that suits the needs and desires of our customers.

Make sure to check out our sizing guides, located on each individual product page, to see what our recommended sizing looks like for your body measurements. Our sizing guides work approximately 99% of the time, and are a great place to start -- plus, we have easy and free (in the US) exchanges so if you do end up needing a smaller or larger size, it's a complete breeze.

Jacket-Picking Hot Tops from TREW:

All of our jackets are sized to allow for plentiful layering underneath, so when choosing your size you will not need to size up if you plan to layer.

Any jacket can work for you! In addition to the above female-specific jackets, we do also have our line of men's jackets that make for great options for women as well, although if you go this route you should consider sizing down at least one size.

Looking for a bit more guidance?

No worries, we're here for you. Get Fitted + Kitted easily by taking our online quiz, and we'll get back to you with your personal product and size recommendation within 2 business days.

We also offer easy returns and exchanges, so if you order the wrong size or want to change styles it's no big deal to swap out. See our Returns + Exchanges page here for more info.
