The new backcountry skiing logo designed by Gone Boarding student Violet Fillinger from Truckee High School! TREW first joined forces with Gone Boarding students two years ago to create an original graphic that would get people everywhere stoked on winter. The resulting design and products created were such a hit that we decided to keep it going and are now in our third year collaborating together! Gone Boarding is a hands-on program that engages students through the design and construction of boards like skateboards, snowboards, and surfboards. By blending creativity, technical skills, and real-world problem-solving, students see the relevance of their learning in action. Gone Boarding transforms the classroom into an experience-driven environment where students are inspired to learn through the full product design life cycle of board creation. The prompt for the students design this year was: "design the new backcountry skiing logo". What commenced was an impressive showing of creativity and talent from the students, and after much deliberation within the TREW team we found Violet's design to be our top pick! TREW and Gone Boarding have created some awesome limited-edition shirts with this rad design on it to support the Gone Boarding Scholarship Fund, and also the budding designer Violet. Learn more about the designer, Violet, through a quick Q&A below and score your Gone Boarding Tee asap! First, tell us about yourself! Hi! My name is Violet Fillinger, I am sophomore at Truckee High School and have grown up in Truckee my whole life. During COVID, I discovered the hobby of doing nails, which inspired me to start drawing and exploring my artistic side. Can you tell us about your connection to the outdoors and outdoor sports? Skiing has always been a big part of my life thanks to my parents and to growing up in Truckee/Tahoe. I started skiing when I was two and since then I have skied tons and met many amazing people! Living with such amazing lakes and mountains makes being outside so much fun. Going paddle boarding or playing spike ball on the beach with friends are definitely some of my favorite things to do. What is your creative process? I have an app on my Ipad called Procreate - which is a known app for those who love to draw. It can be used for tattoo stencils, rough drafts of art, ideas, etc. I use the app for drawing as I love how organized and well thought out it is. I started with a basic circle and mountains in it and next added some shredders on it for style. Then I thought it would be a cool touch to make the skier outside of the circle of design. I created a graph layout around the mountains to slowly fill with patterned designs. That's when my friends came in to help! They helped with different ideas to fill each box to add a cool contrast and so it wouldn't be too repetitive. Were there any challenges your encountered throughout the creative process? Definitely! It is hard to create a design that is not very repetitive, coming up with new ideas was time consuming. What do you hope that consumers will take away from your design? I hope others see it as a very satisfying design to look at, with the attention the geometric patterns bring to it. I also think the silhouette of the mountain with the ski and snowboarder on it is fun as it brings purpose. Shop the 2025 TREW x Gone Boarding collaboration!
