BTS with The Butta Dawgs

Hey Jess & the Trew team,

It’s the Butta Dawgs reporting back after a successful wrap to filming for S4 of Trew to You. We biked! We skied! We skinned! We hauled! We camped! We tried to bring the spirit of steeze to snow as soft as instant mashed potatoes (piping hot and topped with butter, of course). It was no small feat to collect seven blissful minutes of cinema, as the weather was anything but winter. Nonetheless, our team persevered and had a hell of a time in the San Juans.

Monday morning we began with our bikes rigged to ski and our chamois lubed with butter. We embarked on a nine hour road bike filming extravaganza from Durango to Silverton. Anything in the name of B-roll.

Come Tuesday, record heat hit the high country, and the road to Lake Emma was melted. Since we needed to haul our camping gear on sleds, we had to quickly pivot our plan and find a basin with a viable skin track and the epic views we had our hearts set on. Fortunately, we found just the spot.

We began the skiing portion of our journey in the wee hours of Wednesday morning. After an eventful hike, we endured the midday mush and let our in-camp kickers harden as the sun tucked behind the horizon. The evening was spent doing sick tricks, christening our inflatable raft, filming a tender talking scene, and devouring quesadillas thanks to chef Nils.

Thursday started at the crack of dawn, as we raced the sun and tried to milk every ounce of skiing from a prematurely dissipating winter. We filmed with fervor until the mountains made it clear we were no longer welcome.

Analise, Maddie, Brynne, and Nils were some tried and fried dawgs by the day’s end, but we were met with the sweet reward of gas station hot dogs and sugary spiced chai to ease our weary bones. The coming days were full of rest and wrapping up our never-ending bits before Brynne flew back to Portland. Despite conditions that challenged us at nearly every point of filming, and despite the heartbreak of a winter that beckoned us to come to terms with our changing world, we still managed to celebrate the joy of skiing.

Thank you, Trew, for supporting the dream. We cannot wait for you to see our silly little film.

Godspeed,

The Butta Dawgs (Analise, Maddie, Brynne, and Nils)
