Contemplations w/ Chris: We're Still Obsessed with Pockets (and Fit)
publicado por Chris Pew el
When we designed our first bib—the original TREWth Bib—seventeen years ago, we had two things on my mind: storage and fit. Revolutionary, I know.
Back then, you could definitely find gear that kept you dry. You'd just look like you were en route to speedclimb the Eiger, and you'd have exactly zero places to stash a sandwich. So we did what any reasonable people would do: we invented the world's first freeride-optimized, uphill-capable bib.
The pockets were huge. The fit was baggy. The color-blocking was purple and teal. We made our point, and over the years, we won over customers who appreciated our blend of function, fit, and style.
Fast forward seventeen years, and we're back with one of our most significant design overhauls ever to our core PRIMO line. And what's at the top of our optimization list?
Yep. Fit and storage. We love pockets.
The Fit Evolution
Fit is constantly evolving—people's tastes change, bodies are different, and frankly, technology has gotten a lot better at helping garments actually move with you instead of against you. We brought in our in-house fit expert, Steph, and her wizardry with 3D tools and pattern drafting to completely rebuild our PRIMO fits with articulation and movement in mind. The goal? Make garments that disappear when you're out there doing your thing.
The women's fit evolved the most this season. Our friend and style maven, Kellyn Wilson, teamed up with our women's designer, Brittany, to create something special. The result? The Stella and Chariot both have this articulated "straight-cut" fit that's subtly feminine without being hourglass-y. Comfortable, performance-minded, built for serious riders.
The Cosmic and TREWth got similar love. The Cosmic is now shorter with way more room in the chest—better for most body types and especially great for athletic riders. The way Steph engineered that extra chest room means more range of motion in your arms and shoulders. So if you look like a cat thrown out of a window when you huck cliffs, at least your jacket won't ride up.
Storage: Still Our Love Language
We've always been pocket people. With this latest PRIMO line, we wanted to make sure every bit of storage was placed where it actually makes sense—for movement, for access, for not losing your ChapStick in the void.
The Cosmic Jacket's chest pockets are now the main storage area, which just makes sense. They're accessible with a pack on, accessible on a chairlift, and because they're external, your protein bar isn't jabbing you in the ribs all day.
Long-time TREW fans will recognize something on the TREWth bib: we brought back the elastic band construction that runs through the top of the thigh pocket. It creates this expandable pocket that stays closed and actually secures your stuff. We picked up this technique from a guy named Hobey Walker—a skilled patternmaker who helped us make our very first samples back in 2008 in Vancouver. I've always loved that construction and was stoked to bring it back to our modern PRIMO fit.
The Chariot Bib got the same storage upgrades as the TREWth, including those trademark elastic thigh pockets. But we went bigger this season—more pockets, higher volume. The transceiver pocket on the upper bib is noticeably larger than last year's version.
Listening to You
We also made some major design updates that came entirely from our customers, including:
- shifting from a Vislon WP center-front zipper to a beefy WP coil zipper on the Cosmic and Stella jackets for better durability and longevity in the elements
- adjusting the internal chest pockets on our jackets for easier use
- adding low-profile, side-release buckles to the TREWth and Chariot (and better anti-slippage hardware on the straps!)
- adjusting the fly positioning for easier nature calls on the TREWth bib
- adding internal mesh-lined vents to both bibs
- adding external leg vents to the Chariot for additional ventilation
- adding internal wait adjustments to both the TREWth and Chariot bibs
- adding adjustable snap cuffs to the leg openings for better over-boot fit
If you have ever reached out with feedback, participated in a product survey, or even left a review (good or bad) then please know that you were a part of these changes - and we thank you!
Seventeen years in, and we're still tweaking, obsessing, and occasionally arguing about pocket placement. Some things never change.
