Cosmic Charlie, how do you do? Truckin' in style along the avenue.

Whether it’s an ‘84 Toyota Pickup or an eight-pound sledgehammer, we admire things with straight, clean lines that embody function and eschew fussiness. They tend to work well and they usually last a long time, and that’s what we consider good design.

The Cosmic Jacket is our tribute to this principle. So much so that if you already own one, well . . .  you probably won’t need another jacket for quite a while, if you even want one. It combines classic alpine design with modern materials and thoughtful updates to deliver a backcountry-ready, resort-appropriate shell that is iconically timeless, functional, and tough.

      Long Arms

First off this is a well thought out and high quality jacket. Pockets are in the right spots, material seems rugged, the hood fits over my helmet. I am 5’ 7” with a stockier upper body so I went with the medium. My only complaint is the sleeves are about 3”s longer than my previous jacket. I ended up folding the sleeves over.

      Love this jacket!

This jacket is awesome!! I get compliments on it all day long! My only gripe is that there is not a loop to hang it up...kind of surprised it didn't have one at that price point. I so badly want to matching Trewth bibs but can't afford them right now. Great quality Trew! Thanks for the opportunity to review.

Nick, thanks for the review! Glad you're enjoying the Cosmic. We did add a hanger loop for 2019/2020, sorry for that oversight.

      Breathable with awesome fit

I'm not usually one to write reviews but I'm in love with this jacket. I purchased the Cosmic last year in the bright red color and used it most of this season. The fabric is awesome! I feel it's possibly more breathable than gore-tex pro and it doesn't have the crinkly noise. It's also pretty soft to the touch but holds up against trees. I do a fair amount of bootpacking and normally I need to either take off my shell or really open it up. With the Cosmic, I can usually get by just using the pit-zips. The pocket lay-out is perfect. The two smallish chest pockets work great for a lens wipe or bar. And the arm pocket is perfect for RFID tags when resort skiing. In terms of fit, it's looser than a mountaineering shell which is exactly what I was looking for in a jacket. For reference, I'm 5'11" and 170 lbs and I purchased a medium.

I have 3 minor suggestions to improve the jacket (and these really are minor). First, I'd love to be able to remove the powder skirt. Other jackets like Flylow's Quantum have that option. I ski with Trewth bibs and the powder skirt plus bibs combo is usually overkill. Second, I would make the hood maybe 1-2 inches larger. I have a POC auric cut and I find it would be better to have a touch more space (or maybe I just have a big dome). Finally, I'd like to have 2-way pit-zips, which allows for some different venting options. I looked at this year's model and it seems like that's already been added though. Other than those minor quibbles, I think this jacket is just about perfect!

      Patrick, stellar feedback! Thanks.

      Tough Shell and Wind Resistant

Just picked up this jacket last week and took it to the brutal cold of Sugarloaf in Maine in January and it passed with flying colors! Very solid quality, much thicker and tougher than expected for the light weight and packability. It was single digit temps with wind and I was extremely impressed by the wind resistance. I was able to tuck into the hood and tall collar much better than my other shells as well. It's definitely just a shell but with a down puff underneath it was warm. I'm 6' 225lb and the XL is perfect. It seems to have more room in the chest than the torso but that's probably my bad... Never been this happy with a jacket they've really done a nice job with it.

      Mt. Bachelor Patrol

I am a ski patroller at Mt. Bachelor, and have used last year's red Cosmic for a while now. The jacket is super breathable and vents heat very well when we're working hard during morning set-up or taking toboggans down the mountain. With a down jacket underneath it is also tough enough to keep you warm in 80-100mph winds we sometimes get on our mountain. Personally, I am also a big fan of the fit, as I am tall and the jacket is a little longer with longer arms (I'm 6'2, 165lbs, and the M fits great). I haven't gotten to really test how waterproof the jacket is yet as fortunately we haven't had any rain events on the mountain in a while, however it has kept me plenty dry in many snow storms. Love my Cosmic jacket so far!
