Check out this recent edit from TREW rider Garrett Russell, also available for your viewing pleasure at the Nimbus Website.
Most of this footage was taken in backcountry Telluride at the Russell family hut dubbed the Alta Lakes Observatory. A couple weeks ago, I had the pleasure of checking out the Observatory and some of the surrounding terrain and it was unreal. Telluride is located in the southern San Juan’s which never fail to disappoint with challenging technical terrain (see Garrett’s double repel in the above video). The Observatory sits lakeside at timberline in a little basin looking up at all this terrain and it is sure to take your breath away. If the terrain doesn’t do it for you, then staying at the luxurious ALO will certainly dominate your palette leaving a taste of heaven in your mouth. For those of you used to hut trips full of melted snow, rice and beans, and frozen poo cones this is a whole different experience. The Bridal Veil Falls is the home of the second oldest (yeah i checked it out Garrett and according to Wikipedia, the one in Ophir is older) AC generator in the country which provides power to the cabin. This means they have electricity!! Check out what else they have at their website.
You can just tell when you are there that this is a special place. Generations of Russell family memories still linger in the air, but what also leads to the general positively stoked on life vibe you get when you are there is the ever present feeling that anything is possible up there. Just take one look at the Trestle and imagine hucking off it….and you can do it! What’s so great about places like these is that they are willing to share this place with you and me. When people pay to stay there, they use that money to keep the place alive. So be a part of history and keep a tradition alive and go stay at the ALO.

A Russell slice of heaven
